I am at Pathology Visions this week in San Diego. Yesterday I attended several hours of vendor sponsored workshops. Although the workshops were only about 30-60 minutes each I was amazed at how rudimentary many of the presentations were. I understand that I likely know more than the average attendee, but I have to imagine the bigger question current and future consumers of digital pathology have is…“how are YOU (the vendor) different from your competition? What makes you so special?”
All total solution manufacturers have scanners, data management software, image analysis, integration, and workflow strategies. Then there are a ton of specialized companies in image analysis, middleware, data management, data storage, etc who are saying that they can do pieces of the digital pathology puzzle better than the total solution manufacturers can. This has to be a frustrating situation if you are trying to evaluate and decide on a digital pathology solution.
Please take my advice, if the decision making process is not handled right you will waste a lot of time, money, and could end up with the wrong solution for you. No more “but I really trust and like the sales rep,” no more “it’s the cheapest,” no more “they are the industry leader.” Eliminate subjectivity and make educated, unbiased decisions.
